Nonfiction authors generally have a purpose for writing: To inform, to entertain, to persuade, or a combination of the three. Consider the purpose of your book. For your comment on this post, include a quotation (with the page number, as always) that shows the author's purpose for writing. Then, in a few sentences, explain what the quote reveals about purpose. Comment by Friday, 12/7.

I chose the quote "Yet conflict was a part of our lives, written into our very faces, hands, and arms, and to see how contradiction lived and survived in its essence, we had to look no further than our own mother" (McBride 29). I chose this quote because it informs the reader on the conditions of McBride's house and early life during this time period. Living with a single mother and 11 siblings remains difficult enough, but it proves itself as a challenge when all of your siblings are African American, including yourself, and your mother happens to be white. The McBride family grew up together in a neighborhood that received the stereotype of poor and heavily populated by African Americans, and this quote shows how James's mother dealt with her surroundings in a unique way. I believe McBride's purpose of this book was to educate others on the harsh conditions of living as an African American at the time and to show that conflict can be dealt with in multiple ways, as proven by his mother.

As I continue to read through The Color of Water I have found multiple strong quotes over the topic of the book. A few chapters after McBride’s step dad, Hunter Jordan Sr., passed away his mother decides to learn to drive his ‘68 Pontiac Catalina. McBride states the days of waiting for his mom to walk around the corner and pick him up are over and the needed a car. McBride states why he believes she wants to learn to drive the car when he says “She operated on automatic mode, rising each morning and chasing us off to school as if things were as they always were, but she could not make her own decisions” (McBride 164). The quote shows how the sacrifices of being a mother and a busy schedule. These sacrifices show how much dedication she has to her family.

Through the book The Color of Water I realized how much the mother shelters the children from the world as much as she can. I feel that this quote,"'Oh boy...God's not black. He's not white. He's a spirit"'(Mom, pg 50). I feel that this quote shows how McBride wanted to show how the mother will show her children the good in the world before they get their innocence destroyed. McBride really showed how the mother wants to show her children how even someone as high as God does not even have a race or a way for him to be segregated. This shows the mothers dedication to create a good outlook for her kids even if her's is dark.

Comment should say something about purpose. See original post.
