I definitely think that this book started off with a bang. A three year old named Jeannette set herself on fire and almost died. Her mother seems to be very disorganized the same with her father. They are both very clueless. They both do want the best for their daughter and son and want them to embrace their fears and explore the unknown but I think they should try to look out a little more for their daughter because she almost died because their mother was so involved in her painting not even paying attention to her daughter who is three! Also after she almost burns to death they obviously takes her to the hospital and after she gets to a healthy status they steal her from the hospital. She still hadn't even been completely cleared to go home. Overall I'm not a fan of their parenting skills. In the beginning of the book I think it is kinda sad that she finds her mother digging through the trash. They meet for lunch and her mother tries to look okay but Jeannette really knows she isn't. I think that this book really started off with a cold feeling and you know it isn't gonna be a happy book.

I agree, the author did start off the novel with an attention grabbing hook! I was quite interested to read about her first memory as being on fire! The mother and father also seem to not be on the same page, and I hope that doesn't cause too many problems for their family.

The story starts off with Jeannette, the author and main character, in current time, meeting her mother for lunch. She describes her mom as having stained clothes, digging through the dumpster, and putting leftover food into her purse at a restaurant. When she asks what she can do to help, her mom gets offended and says this is how she is happy. As this is a memoir, I predict that the rest of the story will be flashbacks from her childhood, negative memories. After the introduction chapter, my first impression of the story is that Jeannette had a crazy childhood. The first sentence reads "I was on fire". This was at the age of three, when she was cooking hotdogs! Since she was a cooking toddler, I assume that she is a very mature child and will be like a mother role to her siblings.

I agree, I definitely think that this story will mostly be about the flashbacks from her childhood, and how they affect her present day situation. I also believe that she was a mature child considering it seems like her parents were mostly oblivious to the needs of an aging child, I assume the she most took care of herself throughout the years.

Prior to reading this, I have heard that this is Jeannette's family memoir, taking place in Welch West Virginia. Knowing this, I was super excited to read the book. For five years in a row, I have served Welch on missions trips. Welch has such great poverty, and from experience, it will be super easy to visualize what is happening in the story at this location.

The story first starts off with the main character Jeannette seeing her mother for the first time in months digging in someone's trash as she is on her way to a party. She turns around to her apartment on Park Avenue She begins to wonder about her parents, and why they won't accept her help. How she felt guilty for being able to even afford an apartment while her parents can't afford their next meal. While first starting this book I began to think that the woman in the story is spoiled, because she's going to a fancy party, lives in a nice apartment, and is wearing a beautiful sparkly dress. However, it's easily realized that this is not the case when she decides to meet up with her mother. She describes her mother as dirty and hungry mother while she packs her purse up with sauces, and chips off the table. Jeannette's parents will not accept help. Although Jeannette is not rich she would still like to help her parents at least afford the necessities, but her parents are not serious. When asked what the need they will not talk about how they need food, they simply ignore the question, and ask for non necessities. Overall, I feel that this story's mood is going to be gloomy, and show the many different types of lives people live.

I defiantly think it does describe her mother as hungry cause she does stuff all of the sauces from the restaurant into her bag. I do think that this story is gonna be gloomy as well overall the atmosphere is just gloomy. Yes I think as well it is gonna show a lot of different lives cause it started off showing her life and then all of a sudden it was telling us about her mom and dad and how poor they are. I think you really got your point across good job.
